Figure 4.6 summarises the pattern of development of suzhi in the academic domain based on macro and micro analyses in the previous sections. Before 1985, discussions of suzhi were focused on an expansion of qualified suzhi compounds which was a dual process of differentiating and totalising suzhi. This expansion process took place in three stages: prior to 1982, suzhi was only used in a couple of disciplinary contexts as technical jargon; between 1982 and 1985 development of descriptive suzhi compounds flourished in an unrestricted manner; from 1985 onwards guided by government documents, discussions of suzhi were focused on certain types of suzhi. From 1986, theorisation of suzhi began in terms of building models and structures of suzhi using selected types of suzhi. From 1988, the ideology of suzhi started to be applied to the arena of education to shape a ‘new’ conception of education termed suzhi education (suzhi jiaoyu).
